History

Intent

At Jubilee Wood, our intent for history is to ignite children’s curiosity about the past and to help them understand how history has shaped the world they live in today. We aim to develop confident, thoughtful historians who can think critically, ask meaningful questions, and make connections between different periods, people, and places.  Our history curriculum is designed to be engaging, inclusive, and reflective of the diverse backgrounds and cultures within our school community. Through a carefully sequenced programme of study, children develop a secure understanding of chronology, historical concepts, and the skills needed to interpret evidence and evaluate change over time.  We place great value on providing real-world experiences to enrich learning. Educational visits and museum trips, are planned within each unit, bringing history to life and deepening pupils’ understanding through hands-on, memorable experiences. By the end of their primary journey, children will have developed a broad and balanced knowledge of British, local, and world history. They will be able to reflect on the significance of different historical events and individuals, recognise how history influences modern society, and approach the subject with respect, curiosity, and a strong sense of identity.

Implementation

History is taught through carefully planned units that build on prior knowledge and develop key historical skills progressively from Early Years to Year 6. Each unit is designed to link meaningfully with literacy, allowing children to explore historical texts, write recounts, letters, and reports, and use subject-specific vocabulary with increasing confidence. Lessons are sequenced to ensure a clear progression of skills, such as developing an understanding of chronology, interpreting sources, comparing periods, and explaining cause and effect. Teachers use engaging enquiry questions and a variety of activities—including drama, debates, and writing tasks—to deepen understanding and support cross-curricular learning. Assessment opportunities are embedded throughout, ensuring pupils make progress and are prepared for the next stage of learning.

Impact

At our school, the impact of History teaching is seen in the children’s curiosity, critical thinking, and understanding of the world around them. Through a well-planned and progressive curriculum, pupils develop a secure understanding of chronology, historical events, and key figures from both the UK and the wider world. They are able to make thoughtful connections between past and present, explain changes over time, and use appropriate historical vocabulary confidently. Cross-curricular links, especially with literacy, enhance their ability to communicate ideas effectively through written and oral work. By the time they leave primary school, our pupils are equipped with the skills to ask questions, interpret evidence, and think like historians, laying a strong foundation for future learning and informed citizenship.

At Jubilee Wood, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of history and ensure that every child feels represented and valued in the stories we explore together.
