Geography
Intent
At Jubilee Wood Primary School Primary School, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The Geography curriculum at Jubilee Wood enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas, and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge, and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes, all linked to the National Curriculum. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at Jubilee Wood and into their further education and beyond.
Implementation
Geography at Jubilee Wood is taught in units throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. There are three Geography units for each year group throughout the school year. The key knowledge and skills of each topic have been clearly identified, and consideration has been given to ensure that there is progression across and between topics throughout each year group and across the school (refer to progression map). Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion. Cross curricular outcomes in Geography are specifically planned for, with strong links between Geography and writing outcomes identified, planned for, and utilised. The local area is utilised to achieve the desired outcomes in fieldwork studies (with new opportunities always being sought out to further enhance this essential tenet of Geography), and opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice.
Impact
At Jubilee Wood, the impact of our successful Geography curriculum is seen through the children’s inquisitiveness in lessons. A well planned, progressive curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6 equips children with a secure knowledge of the world and their role in it. Children build both their knowledge and skills over their time at Jubilee Wood, enabling them to make thoughtful links between geographical topics studied. Children will use geographical vocabulary organically and use this to support skills from across the wider school curriculum, such as their reading and writing. Not only does this furnish them with a greater vocabulary, their ability to express themselves and their meaning is also enhanced. At the end of their primary education pathway, children are able to ask questions, interpret data and interpret the world as inquisitive geographers, which will serve them well as they move into their secondary education and beyond.
